Lost in Ignorance
Vogue made two major misteps in a recent “fashion trend” post on their website:
1 - They referred to earrings as a “slavery trend piece”
2 - They “apologized” by saying the Italian meaning doesn’t translate well to English. Instead of “slavery” it should be “ethnic.”
Suggesting the words “slavery” and “ethnic” can be used interchangeably is even more offensive than the original offense!! This is not a matter of translation, it’s a matter of ignorance.
Finally, after a second backlash from their “apology” they have removed the article. The lesson here? It’s better to admit defeat than try to spin your way out of a mistake.
All else should not have to fail before you apologize.
